Senior Backend Engineer

What you'll do:

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical foundation of an advanced SaaS platform that empowers global brands to make smarter shopper marketing decisions. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve architecting secure APIs that seamlessly connect with modern front-end applications while integrating third-party platforms for enhanced automation. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to bring product visions to life—designing resilient data pipelines for complex workflows, maintaining high standards of code quality through rigorous testing and documentation practices, and driving continuous improvement in system performance. Success in this role means proactively identifying opportunities for optimisation across cloud infrastructure components while championing best practices in security and compliance.

• Take ownership of backend development for a next-generation B2B SaaS product by building robust Django REST APIs consumed by modern web applications through secure gateways.
• Implement secure authentication and authorisation protocols using Azure AD SSO and optional Okta integration while ensuring role-based access control and multi-tenant patterns.
• Build and operate resilient asynchronous pipelines using Celery/Redis for file processing and job orchestration; expose real-time job status updates to user interfaces.
• Integrate external systems such as HubSpot (REST/webhooks), Outlook/SMTP notifications, and OpenAI endpoints to automate workflows and enhance platform capabilities.
• Design and maintain efficient schemas in Azure SQL; manage artefacts and results in Azure Blob Storage with proper retention policies and lineage tracking.
• Ensure optimal performance, scalability, and reliability of both internal-facing and external-facing services by profiling Python code and tuning SQL queries.
• Instrument observability across services using structured logs, metrics, tracing via App Insights/Azure Monitor/OpenTelemetry; create runbooks as well as service-level agreements/objectives.
• Write well-crafted, thoroughly tested, readable, and maintainable code; actively contribute to code reviews and uphold engineering standards within the team.
• Stay current with backend development trends including security best practices on OWASP guidelines, secrets management, RBAC implementation, encryption protocols for data at rest/in transit, GDPR compliance.
• Participate in threat modelling exercises and periodic system hardening activities to ensure ongoing protection of sensitive data.

What you bring:

To excel as a Senior Backend Engineer, you will bring proven expertise in developing scalable backend architectures using Python frameworks paired with deep knowledge of cloud technologies—particularly Microsoft Azure. Your background should include hands-on experience integrating complex external systems into enterprise platforms while maintaining high standards for security compliance. You will demonstrate meticulous attention to detail when modelling data structures or optimising database queries under demanding workloads. Your proficiency with modern DevOps tools ensures smooth deployment processes while your commitment to documentation supports long-term maintainability. Beyond technical acumen, your interpersonal skills will enable you to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams—sharing insights generously so others can learn from your experiences.

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or related field demonstrating strong academic foundations relevant to backend engineering roles.
• At least five years’ experience building production-grade backend systems using Python frameworks such as Django/DRF or FastAPI combined with solid SQL expertise.
• Proven track record designing RESTful APIs along with asynchronous workers (Celery/Redis), including handling idempotency concerns, implementing retries logic, and monitoring distributed tasks effectively.
• Hands-on experience deploying solutions on Microsoft Azure (App Service, App Gateway + WAF integration), managing identity providers (Azure AD/OIDC), securing secrets (Key Vault), optimising databases (Azure SQL), handling large-scale storage (Blob Storage), leveraging monitoring tools (Monitor/App Insights).
• Demonstrated ability integrating third-party platforms like HubSpot APIs/webhooks for CRM automation; SMTP/Outlook for notification systems; OpenAI APIs for workflow enhancements.
• Advanced skills in data modelling techniques plus query-tuning abilities; comfortable executing schema migrations as well as diagnosing performance bottlenecks within relational databases.
• Proficiency with automated testing frameworks (pytest), version control systems (Git/GitHub), CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions); active participation in peer code reviews alongside thorough documentation habits.
• Comprehensive understanding of security best practices including OWASP guidelines adherence, secrets management strategies, role-based access controls (RBAC), encryption methods for safeguarding data at rest/in transit; awareness of GDPR requirements impacting software design choices.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills enabling effective collaboration across diverse teams; resourceful problem-solving approach coupled with proactive ownership mentality when tackling technical challenges.
• Previous experience working within startup environments is highly desirable due to the fast-paced nature of product development cycles.
