Credit Risk and IFRS9 Governance Lead
CREDIT RISK AND IFRS9 GOVERNANCE LEAD
A leading technology-driven financial services group is seeking a Credit Risk and IFRS Governance Lead to take full ownership of the expected credit loss (ECL) process across its banking and financing entities in Metro Manila. This is an exceptional opportunity for you to shape the ECL framework from the ground up, ensuring compliance with IFRS 9 and PFRS 9 standards while building a dependable team that supports continuity and growth. You will work closely with senior risk and finance leaders, presenting your findings to key committees and engaging directly with auditors, validators, and regulators. The organisation offers flexible hybrid working arrangements, a supportive environment where your expertise is valued, and the chance to make a significant impact on one of the most important numbers in a rapidly expanding lending business.
* You will have end-to-end responsibility for the ECL process, including model development, scenario design, policy drafting, and regulatory engagement, ensuring all outputs are fully documented and compliant.
* You will build and nurture a small team to ensure process continuity, sharing knowledge and fostering collaborative relationships across risk, finance, audit, and regulatory functions.
* You will enjoy flexible working opportunities within a knowledgeable network of professionals who value inclusive growth leadership and support your ongoing training and development.
What you'll do:
As Credit Risk and IFRS Governance Lead based in Metro Manila, you will be entrusted with overseeing every aspect of the expected credit loss process for multiple entities within a fast-growing financial services group. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve running complex calculations using advanced quantitative techniques to estimate parameters such as probability of default (PD), loss given default (LGD), exposure at default (EAD), staging assessments, scenario weightings, and final provisioning. You will deliver comprehensive reports ready for financial statements as well as regulatory submissions. Working collaboratively with risk modellers and finance professionals, you will review models critically—rebuilding them when needed—and establish best practices for documentation. You will draft impairment policies that meet both local (PFRS 9) and international (IFRS 9) standards while designing macroeconomic scenarios tailored to Philippine market conditions. Each period you’ll conduct thorough sensitivity analyses and back-testing to ensure accuracy before preparing detailed papers for management committees. You’ll lead technical conversations with external stakeholders—including auditors and regulators—defending your methodologies with clear evidence. By applying frameworks consistently across group companies and supporting consolidated reporting efforts, you’ll play a pivotal role in maintaining compliance. Importantly, you’ll build a reliable team structure so that processes remain robust even as the organisation grows.
* Run the expected credit loss calculation each reporting period by managing data inputs, parameter estimation (PD/LGD/EAD), staging decisions, scenario weighting, and final provision determination.
* Deliver comprehensive provisions that cover model outputs, post-model adjustments, and forward-looking overlays for financial, regulatory, and management reporting purposes.
* Review existing credit risk models with the risk modelling team; challenge assumptions where necessary; rebuild models as required; set rigorous standards for documentation and change control.
* Draft and maintain impairment policies under IFRS 9/PFRS 9 covering significant increase in credit risk criteria, default definitions, staging methodology, write-off procedures, cure criteria, and technical content for IFRS 7 disclosures.
* Design macroeconomic scenarios relevant to the Philippines—including base case, upside, downside—and recommend overlays to capture emerging risks not reflected in historical data.
* Conduct sensitivity analyses, movement tracking, back-testing each period; prepare detailed ECL papers for management review as well as Audit and Risk Committee presentations.
* Lead technical discussions on ECL methodology with external auditors, independent model validators, and regulatory examiners; defend approaches using robust evidence.
* Apply the ECL framework consistently across all group companies; support consolidated IFRS reporting requirements at group level.
* Own the ECL number for every reporting period—ensuring timely delivery with complete documentation—and manage relationships with auditors, validators, regulators regarding ECL matters.
* Build a dependable team of at least two members so that processes are never reliant on one individual; ensure all procedures are thoroughly documented for continuity.
What you bring:
To excel as Credit Risk and IFRS9 Governance Lead you will bring substantial experience gained over eight years in credit risk modelling or impairment roles within reputable banks or consumer lending organisations—or at top-tier financial risk consultancies. Your expertise includes direct involvement in building sophisticated ECL models compliant with IFRS 9 standards from inception through execution. You possess advanced quantitative abilities spanning parameter estimation techniques like PD/LGD/EAD modelling alongside proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R which enable efficient data analysis. Your deep understanding of accounting standards ensures that your approach goes beyond mere modelling into operational compliance territory. You have successfully defended complex methodologies before external auditors or validators by articulating judgments clearly using evidence-based reasoning—a skill complemented by your outstanding interpersonal communication abilities. Fluency in professional English allows you to connect effectively across teams while experience with local regulations (PFRS 9) adds further value. If you have worked on fast-growing unsecured consumer lending portfolios or designed overlays where historical data is limited—and hold relevant professional certifications—you will be particularly well-suited for this role.
* Eight or more years’ experience in credit risk modelling or impairment roles within banks or consumer lenders—or at Big Four financial risk practices—with proven track record of delivering results.
* Direct hands-on experience building and running an IFRS 9 ECL model end-to-end rather than simply reviewing models developed by others.
* Advanced quantitative skills including PD/LGD/EAD modelling techniques; proficiency in roll rates analysis; survival or vintage analysis; strong working knowledge of Python, R or SQL programming languages.
* Comprehensive understanding of IFRS 9 impairment as an accounting standard—not just from a modelling perspective but also from an operational compliance standpoint.
* Demonstrated ability to defend ECL methodologies to external auditors or independent validators through clear communication backed by robust evidence.
* Exceptional interpersonal skills enabling you to explain complex judgments clearly to boards or committees comprised of non-specialists.
* Fluent professional English—both written and spoken—to facilitate effective communication across diverse teams and external stakeholders.
* Experience with PFRS 9 in BSP-supervised banks or licensed institutions outside the Philippines is highly desirable but not mandatory.
* Background in unsecured consumer or digital lending portfolios—especially those experiencing rapid growth with limited loss history—is considered advantageous.
* Experience designing scenarios or overlays where historical data is scarce plus professional qualifications such as FRM (Financial Risk Manager), CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), or CPA (Certified Public Accountant) are beneficial.
